Why are there some states that restrict you from buy wine from out of state?
I don't understand why I cannot buy wine from out of state and have it shipped to me. Is this because of taxes or is this because there are local wineries in the state?
Actually, it's more complicated than just taxes, although that's the motivation behind it all. In terms of wine specifically, each state has its own rules in terms of labeling and other aspects of wine sales. So not all vineyards and not all distributors will have their wines in all states.
In fact, in talking with my local wine shop owner, he said that some wines that are exactly the same need different labels for different states they are shipped to. There was one with a silhouette of a naked person that was ok in some states but others required a change.
So taxes are an issue, but it's more complex--each state has its own laws governing wine sales (and probably other alcohol too) so that's another reason they don't want you purchasing in one state and bringing to another.
