Very simply put, in *any* ecosystem, the more organisms that you have competition for the same finite amount of resources, the larger the load on those resources. The resources can and will deplete, and the organisms trying to use them will eventually begin to die off as Mother Nature keeps things in balance -- not enough food to feed Africans who don't understand birth control? Africans die.
Works the same with *any* life form. Too many deer in a forest. Too many bacteria in the ocean. Any time you have "too many" or "overpopulation," it's going to be bad. On the other hand, if the consumers are smaller in number than to keep the producers in check... then the producers will continue to produce, sometimes this leads to very flourishing systems, sometimes it's just as bad as overpopulation.
We humans also have the side effect of introducing toxins as landfills, soot, dangerous gases, etc. into our own environment.
This is why I have taken what many people call me a cold-hearted bastard for. If a guy in buttwater India has a farm with two goats and a half acre of land, and he knows that he can only support one kid, two max... and then has twelve, and expects the civilized word to bring him grain.. I say screw him. He knew what he was getting into. Let Nature take its course.
