Water powered cars?
Regarding the recent clip on reuters/itn (I forget which):
Does anyone know the science behind it? It's not mentioned in any of the video reports, but they say it splits water to produce hydrogen gas, which the most simple way would be through electrolysis. Another method would be to produce hydrogen by reacting with a reactive metal, but then both of these techniques still require energy to produce the splitting element. Basically it's a glorified electric car if I got it right, and that'll just push up electricity bills, which I guess could be resolved by more renewable sources, but considering the amount needed :s.
It is a car that uses some sort of electricity to convert water to hydrogen by electrolysis. The hydrogen is then used as fuel or in a fuel cell. Electrolysis is very inefficient so it would be much more efficient to use the electricity produced rather than waste energy making the hydrogen. It is thermodynamically inefficient and a bit of a fraud.
