What are some tips or advice for being more frugal with money?

I make a decent income, I’m not wealthy by any means, but I should have more in the way of savings than I do. I guess I’m in need of a good pep talk to curtail my needless spending.

How can I learn to live frugally?

My wife and I both want to save for our own and our childs future, and I've agreed that intead of spending over £150 per week on silly things that I don't need such as takeaways, pub visits, new clothes etc etc etc I'll live on a budget of £40 per week which will include my petrol for car, food for the week, and anything else that crops up.

Well done Ricky, good question. Depends a lot on where you live of course, and your target whilst admirable is a bit ambitious, bearing in mind there seems to be a child in the house. Given these current times, and providing you do not drink or smoke, heating and lighting might be your biggest outgoing after rent/or mortgage, more expensive for you than food. A tip for you - We like to eat in a sensible healthy fashion without going overboard about it. I make a gallon of Bolognaise sauce from tomatoes, peppers, onions, and only half a pound of minced beef. With the Italian herbs and two stock cubes it makes a delicious meal with pasta. I calculate that We get 12 generous helpings each from this at a cost of £0.95 each. Freeze it. Also we buy a chicken, roast it for a Sunday lunch, take off the rest of the meat to make a stirfry with veggies, boil the carcass of the chicken with carrots, lentils and rice for a very tasty soup. One chicken, plus bits and bobs makes 8 good healthy meals at about £0.65p each.
