How can I learn to live frugally?

My wife and I both want to save for our own and our childs future, and I've agreed that intead of spending over £150 per week on silly things that I don't need such as takeaways, pub visits, new clothes etc etc etc I'll live on a budget of £40 per week which will include my petrol for car, food for the week, and anything else that crops up.

I find this idea very excitiny as I know It will do me and my family good, my wife and I earn a good wage so therefore we'll be able to watch our money grow but ONLY if I stick to this plan. What sort of tips can you give me? how can I make this £40 per week last on everything? (am I being too optimstic?) could YOU live on £40 per week?

Thanks a lot,
Ricky.

Well done Ricky, good question. Depends a lot on where you live of course, and your target whilst admirable is a bit ambitious, bearing in mind there seems to be a child in the house. Given these current times, and providing you do not drink or smoke, heating and lighting might be your biggest outgoing after rent/or mortgage, more expensive for you than food. A tip for you - We like to eat in a sensible healthy fashion without going overboard about it. I make a gallon of Bolognaise sauce from tomatoes, peppers, onions, and only half a pound of minced beef. With the Italian herbs and two stock cubes it makes a delicious meal with pasta. I calculate that We get 12 generous helpings each from this at a cost of £0.95 each. Freeze it. Also we buy a chicken, roast it for a Sunday lunch, take off the rest of the meat to make a stirfry with veggies, boil the carcass of the chicken with carrots, lentils and rice for a very tasty soup. One chicken, plus bits and bobs makes 8 good healthy meals at about £0.65p each.

How to save money in the household?

I'm looking for ways to save money on household items. From the everyday purchases, to larger ones. Or ways to save on everyday expenses.
How do you or your family members practice living frugally???

when grocery shopping, make a list of the things you NEED, not want. try shopping at thrift stores or one of those stores that sell all type of store brands for cheap. turn thermostat to 68 degrees in winter(a litle cold but wear a sweater and socks) keep it the same in summer too. when washing clothes, put washer and dryer on energy saving settings, and only wash once or twice a week. keep unnecessary lights oof( try those new spiral looking light bulbs they save on energy, a little expensive when you buy them but they last a really long time) diy certain things, like making your own curtains(instead of buy them, they are quite expensive) with like buying a car, try to get the striped down model( i bought a brand new car-striped down for only 10,000) get one with good gas mileage too. only take like a 10-15 min shower, with water setting on medium heat.

Frugal Living = Thankfulness

A frugal lifestyle shouldn't vanish when economy rebounds
Frugality. That's been the buzzword of the Great Recession.Sliding home values, stumbling stock portfolios and a shaky job market brought with them a consciousness about spending that many of us misplaced during years of consumer overindulgence. Americans responded to the crisis by buying less, clipping coupons more and increasing savings to 4.8 percent of disposable income in December, up from ...
