Why is my light switch making buzzing/grinding noises?
My bed room ceiling light switch (on the wall) makes buzzing and grinding noises every time I switch it on. After a while, the switch cover feels warm. I removed the cover and the inside of the wall is full of dust and splinters (it's an old house) but there's no wire damage visible to me.
All I did today was to change a bulb! They're all high-efficiency bulbs so I know the wattage isn't too high.
What's wrong and what do I do about it?
Yep, same noise, perhaps not as loud but now the bulbs flicker ever so slightly.
Is this going to burn my wall up if I leave the light on?
I'll be shitted if I have to call someone in to repair it.
The contacts on the switch are dirty or corroded. They are not making good contact when you turn it on and make a resistive connection instead of a zero ohm (or close) connection. As current flows through that resistance (corrosion) it heats up the contacts. Don't use that switch at all. Replace it with a new switch. Note the comments made above about dimmer switches and aluminum wiring. If it is aluminum wiring, use a switch compatible with aluminum wiring.
