The sine wave is a chosen way of representing the amplitude and frequency of the voltage. It's only a scale..... the actual flow pattern is a very detail flux map...So that you can understand the sine wave better the height of the curve in one period is the voltage representation the repetition rate or period is a function of the frequency.
In a bulk line right out of the power plant there are three wires that carry the voltage its a three phase Hv system at 138kv..generally,,..As the power is divided along the substations the 138Kv is dropped down to other usable voltages like 12470v and 1760,,,When it gets to your house its dropped again and split into single phase . the voltage there is 240 volts with a static neutral being created by grounding .
