Are there any volunteer groups going to Florida to help the birds/sea life?
I have the summer off and would love to go to Florida and help clean birds and help in general with the oil spill. I mostly want to help save birds and sea life. Are there any activist groups or volunteer groups over there? Please let me know if you have any info, I want to help!
Please be aware that what's needed most are SKILLED volunteers. That means people who have at least one of the following:
* experience regularly hunting, fishing and watching birds and other wildlife along the Gulf coast
* training and certification in handling wildlife, particularly birds and marshland animals
* verifiable skills in managing logistics or people during emergency situations
If you don't have any of these skills, you might be able to help to support the volunteers who do have this experience and are deployed by various organizations (by serving and preparing other volunteers, for instance), HOWEVER, please be aware that, if you are accepted as a volunteer, you will be most likely be required to provide your own transportation, pay for and coordinate your own accommodations while in the area, pay for and coordinate your own meals, and take care of any other needs you might have yourself. In other words, you need to be prepared to be completely self-funded and self-sustaining. Volunteers who do have the skills that are needed are also being asked to be self-funded and self-sustaining, even to provide some their own equipment (binoculars, appropriate clothing, boating and boating safety equipment, sun protection, life jacket, etc.).
The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana is acting as a volunteer clearinghouse to identify volunteers with any specialized skills, and is coordinating its efforts with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, coastal parish governments and the Coast Guard. Anyone interested in helping can fill out the volunteer form online. The National Wildlife Federation is also recruiting volunteers for Volunteer Gulf Coast Surveillance Teams, and is seeking people with experience regularly hunting, fishing and watching birds and other wildlife along the Gulf coast. Again, if you don't have the experience needed and cannot be completely self-funded, please don't ask to volunteer.
One thing you can do -- and this is VERY important and effective -- is to write and mail a hand-written or hand-signed letter to your US Representative, your US Senator, and the President (one letter each), saying how upset you are about this oil spill and that you want to make sure the government is going to hold everyone associated with this spill financially responsible and that the government will take steps to prevent this from ever happening again. Public pressure DOES work, but just posting outrage to your FaceBook status does nothing. No matter your age, no matter where you live in the USA, contact your federal elected representatives via traditional postal mail about what is happening in the Gulf! You might want to copy it and mail it to your local newspaper, TV and news radio stations as well.
If you want to donate human hair, pet hair or feathers for all-natural booms to soak up the oil in the Gulf and for other spills, sign up at the Matter of Trust web site and you will receive an email in the coming weeks regarding where to donate the hair in your area. HOWEVER, as noted by Terry Hazen, head of the ecology department at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, "If you shaved everybody in the United States, there wouldn't be enough hair to cover this oil spill." The hair will help... but it cannot be applied to a catastrophe of this size.
