What is life like as a naval officer?
I am an official candidate for the United States Naval Academy. With my academics and extracurriculars, I would think I'm a shoe-in. If I don't get in I plan to do NROTC. What is life like as an officer in the navy? How about family life? (I'm leaning towards going career) How often do you get to see your family? Or even talk to them overseas? How about being a young single officer, is it even possible to start a relationship when the girl knows you'll be gone half the year at sea? Can anyone shed some light?
Many Naval officers are married and have very successful family lives and marriages. Sen. McCain is from a Naval family (and, yes, I acknowledge he did divorce once, but I doubt you would say he isn't successful).
I didn't attend the Naval Academy. I got my commission direct (I'm in health services). But I'm married (nine years now) with two kids and I think my family life is pretty good. I do travel sometimes, but with cell phones and e-mail, you can stay in touch.
My job requires me to travel a bit less than some. I am at home about 85 - 90% of the time. When I do deploy, it can be intense. You stay very busy, so you probably don't have time to miss your family nearly as much as they will miss you. But as long as you're in a good and trusting relationship, no matter how much you travel it won't destroy your family. The Navy also has a lot of built in support that "civilians" just don't have.
Overall, I'd recommend it as a career. It has it's highs and lows like any job would, but it depends on what drives you. Some are driven by money... Entrepreneurship is their best bet. Not to sound corny, but I'm driven by patriotism... I love going home at the end of the day feeling like I've served my country, rather than just feeling lucky to be in it.
