Mexican folk-lore?

I'm trying to find out the origin of the story regarding the "little people who have to live in the water." A friend of mine heard this story as a small child and swears that there are a group of people who live in southern Mexico who have to stay in the water or they will die. Evidently the people have webbed-feet and are of small stature. They are supposedly found somewhere close to Tabasco. He swears that they are real and that they live in their own little area. If anyone has any idea what I'm/he's talking about, please let me know.

I've never heard of that........... but i think your talking about Duendes there little people who live in the jungles or around small villages in Mexico and south America..... and usually late at night they go play by the rivers..... and they just love children..... if they see one they'll try and play with them.... but next day the child will wake up with a fever..... and also there really creepy looking...... i actually saw one.... when i was 9years old ..... i was visiting my family in Antigua Guatemala... and at that time my aunts house was under construction so there was no roof on the second floor..... but me and my cousin decided to sleep up stairs.... it was so beautiful.... because above us we can see the big moon and the trees above us.... so as we where falling asleep.... i started hearing noises above in the trees... i thought i was a monkey so i just ignored it..... but i kept hearing it get closer and closer....... and out of no where i heard a big thump.... on top of the dresser next to the bed..... so i turned around to see what i was.... and there it was a Duende.... it was looking at me and my cousin.....(she was asleep already).... man it looked so creepy and ugly.... it's body was small.... and it's skin was really white....... and it had these long fingers.... and it's face looked so weird.... i can't even describe it.... deformed face...... but man i soon as i saw it..... i turned around in the bed..... so i can be facing the wall and i covered my face with the blanks ((i was just hoping it would go away)).... then all of sudden i felt these hold little long fingers playing with my hair..... Oh MAN!!!! i just couldn't take it any more ..... ((i actually passed out because i was so scared).... the next day i woke up with this horrible fever... i actually got Scarlet Fever ..... i was rushed to the hospital... man they had to give me all these shoots..... they said i was so close of dying because of the horrible fever i got.....

okay that was my story.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

my mother also told me about a horrible encouter a lady had in her village when she was a little girl........ my mom told me that when this lady was a little girl she had very long beautiful hair....also...... she would suddenly go missing in the middle of the night.... when she would wake up..... she would always wake up under a tree with hair completly braided........ and this would be like a everyday thing..... so her parents started puttting chicken poop in her hair but that didn't work..... so they started making her sleep with them.... but that still didn't work..... her parents....then started taking turns watching her in the middle of the night.... but once the parents would start to dose off she would be gone...... and little girl was so confused about what was happening to her.... well one night she actually woke up as they were caring her into the jungle... when the duendes saw that she was a wake they dropped her..... ran off..... man that scared the crap out of her.... so she told her parents.... and they chopped off all hair.... and that when it all stopped...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

another experience i was told about was from my bestfriends fiancee..... he said when he was a young boy in mexico..... he would always play by the river late at night... and he said he would see these strange looking people.... he said they where small white.... and naked..... he said he thought they where children...... so he would play with them... until it would get late..... and he also said that the next day he would always wake up sick...... well one day his mom saw him playing with them and she freaked out that they moved away from the river
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

okay this is my last story about another encounter

one of my co-worker at work told me about her aunt... that lived in a village..... she said one morning as her was finished washing the cloths..... that she started hanging her cloths on the...... the vines of the trees to dry........ well she said as her aunt turned around to get more cloths.... then turned back she noticed that her white dress was on the floor... so she picked it up and washed it again and hanged it on the tree again..... when she looked away and turned back the dress was on the floor again.....so she washed it again..... this actually happened to her.... at least 4more times and until she turned around and the dress was gone.... and all of the sudden she saw the duendes playing with her dress above in the trees..... she was so scared.... she didn't know what to do .... so she stood there and watched them.... as they laughed at her and swung in the trees... all of sudden they threw her dress on the floor and they disappeared into the trees
