How can you tell what kind of Metal my light switch plates are?

I have some REALLY old light switch cover plates and outlet plates. They are silver in look, and magnets stick to them. Some of them are super shiny, which makes me think Stainless steel, some are dulled in color which makes me think Chome plated. How do I know? Do I have to take this to a dealer?

They are probably just chrome plated steel, it's hard to get stainless to polish to a really shiny finish. The ones that are dull in color are possibly just regular, unplated steel. These are usually used in the commercial market when the conduit (the tubes the wires run in) are exposed. They still sell the chrome plated ones at the home center.
