income tax filing question?

I am comfused. I live in Nevada, and I purchased a 2008 used Nissan Versa in October 2009. Can I, or can I not, claim any kind of state sales tax deduction for this??? Or does it absolutely have to be a new, hybrid car. I am getting mixed answers while I am researching the net. I have been doing my own taxes for over 20 years, because it is fairly simple, and because I got overcharged by a tax preparer for the child care tax credit.

If you're taking a standard deduction, only sales tax on NEW cars can be added to the std deduction on schedule L.

If you are itemizing and claiming sales tax, then yes you can deduct sales tax on a used car, and can add it to the std table amount for the sales tax deduction.

A credit for a hybrid is a totally separate issue from a sales tax deduction, but in any case that applies only to new car purchases.
