Lease or buy? Retiring in 2 yrs and monthly income will decrease.?
I am trying to help my mother make a very important decision. She is ready to turn in her lease and can't decide whether to lease again, or buy this time. Some things we are considering is the fact that, in 2 years, when she does retire, her monthly income will be reduced and things are tight already. She has excellent credit and is leaning toward an 08 Ford Edge SE, (2nd choice 08 Taurus) and can get the A plan. If she buys, she can either take the good rebates offered through the end of the month, or go with the 0% financing option....Or, she can lease again (looking at a 3 yr, since research shows that to be better than a 2 yr). If she buys, my concern is with resale value. If the industry keeps going to hybrids, she may get stuck with a car she can't sell if she needs to. I've played with all kinds of online tools but nothing helps with the factor of her retiring in 2 yrs and having to live on reduced income. Please help! We have to decide this week!
In my opinion I would buy. And I would buy and keep the car with the intention that I am going to keep it forever. Good used cars always sell good, however, one thing that you want to keep an eye for is that whether the car you buying has had a good resale value history.
For example, if you look at the used Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys you will notice that those cars keep a good value over certain amount of years cause people don't mind buying them used as they are reliable cars.
The only reason that I say she shouldn't go with the lease is that, she will be leasing the car for another three years, and then with her tight budget she will have to put another down payment to lease another car and at the end she will own no car.
At least if she buys now, and decides that she wants another car and can't sell it, she could trade in the vehicle and use the money for down payment for a future car that she might want to lease.
