when loading a single horse in a double trailer, should it go on the outside?
In most states, there are laws which require that a single horse, which is loaded in a 2 horse, side by side trailer, is to be loaded on the left side of the trailer.The left side, being the side that is on the center of the road, not the shoulder side of the road. Unfortunately, most people who pull horse trailers, have no idea of the laws, but an alert police officer, can give you a ticket for misloading your trailer, and make you unload, and reload your horse.
The reasons for loading this way, are strictly safety related.
1)Roads crown at the center line, and slope however gradually, towards the shoulder.
2)Horses have a tendancy to fidget around, and can get the trailer swaying back and forth.
3)If the horse is on the left/high side of the trailer, the chance of the trailer swaying off the shoulder, away from the horse's weight, is far less likely, than if the horse were on the right/low side of the trailer.
4)If you are loading 2 horses in, it is safest to load the heavier of the 2, on the left side, and the lighter on the right.
