what does this poem by philip larkin mean?
Continuing to live -- that is, repeat
A habit formed to get necessaries --
Is nearly always losing, or going without.
It varies.
This loss of interest, hair, and enterprise --
Ah, if the game were poker, yes,
You might discard them, draw a full house!
But it's chess.
And once you have walked the length of your mind, what
You command is clear as a lading-list.
Anything else must not, for you, be thought
To exist.
And what's the profit? Only that, in time,
We half-identify the blind impress
All our behavings bear, may trace it home.
But to confess,
On that green evening when our death begins,
Just what it was, is hardly satisfying,
Since it applied only to one man once,
And that one dying.
Philip Larkin was known to be a very pessimistic poet, who often wrote about the theme of death in his poems.
In this poem he is dealing with the issue of aging and finally death.
The issue of aging is indicated when he says: 'Loss of interest, hair'- this could mean losing ones sanity by going senile and losing hair which is associated with aging.
He also indicates aging and the loss of ones mind when he says: 'And once you have walked the length of your mind'- this could mean that a persons mind has a length that we all one day reach.
Whe Larkin refers to chess this can link with real life- as you need to be strategic in life, as you do in the game of chess.
In the final stanza, it is like Larkin is indicating that life is only important to one person- you: 'Since it applied only to one man once' and now he is dying- so is life unimportant, because it just comes to end when you die?
