Can you hook up a 2 gang light switch with 3 wires? If so, how?
I have a 2 gang light switch that will turn two different lights on/off in my bathroom. When I replaced the old, single gang light switch, I noticed I have just a red, black and white wire coming out of the wall. The old single gang light switch was just working one of the lights in my bathroom and now I want to use both lights. I also noticed on the old single gang switch that the black wire was hooked to the COM on the switch if that helps.
My first response would be to call an electrician or somebody familiar with electricity. If you decide to not do that, here's what you do. First get a voltmeter. Then you're going to make sure the uninsulated conductors(copper part of the wire) are not touching anything, and turn the breaker on. After you do this, test for voltage on all three wires(VAC on your meter, or a lightning symbol with AC and/or wave next to it). If I'm understanding your statement correctly, only one wire should have 120vac(110-125vac), the other two should be going to the lights. Now if this is not the case call an electrician, if this is the case you need to secure the breaker(check the wires with your meter afterwards) and you will need two jumper wires, 14 gauge solid, each about 6-8 inches in length and a wire nut(it should be red, to hold (3) 14gauge wires, and two single pole switches, you can tell because they only have three screws for wires, two for the switch and one for ground(green). Take your two jumper wires, cut the insulation back about 3/4 of an inch(try not to nic the wire, then twist them around your hot wire(the wire with 120vac on it)in a clock wise motion. Twist the wire nut on, then electrical tape the wire nut to the three wires. Then you can attach, your two jumper wires to your switches, then attach your two remaining wires to the other bottom screw on the switch(not the green one, that's for ground only, which your house doesn't have). After you do this , place your switches in the off position and turn the breaker back on. Check for voltage on your switches make sure all is as should be. If everything looks good, turn each switch on individually, checking that the lights work. If for any reason, when you turn the switch on and the breaker trips stop what you are doing and call an electrician. If everything works turn the breaker back off, wrap everything back up(if you like going above and beyond, you can wrap electrical tape around the switches, so that it covers the screws. I cannot stress how important it is to call an electrician if there is any doubt. They're expensive, but it's for a reason. Most electricians have acquired a serious amount of knowledge and know the little things, ins and outs if you will, about electricity, especially the dangers involved. So again, if you are unsure about what you are doing, call an electrician. But since I'm assuming you wont, never work on live electricity. The only thing you do live is test with meters and after everything is wrapped up in the box. Never trust insulated tools and always double check yourself by checking it with the meter.
