Is this the same situation in you country? Does it pay to be thrifty throughout life?

Is it fair that someone`s providence ends up paying for care in their old age rather than being handed down to the family? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1152423/60-000-elderly-year-forced-councils-sell-homes-pay-care.html ...but people who havn`t been so frugal get it for free?
Philip...these are not `rich` people ...the majority have been working class who have chosen to buy their own homes therefore have collateral .

Fee's should be according to ones income not what 's been worked for and bought and paid for. Wages earned have been taxed, nearly everything purchased has been taxed in one way or another, this seems to be another way screwing as much as possible out of people that for the most part have worked very hard to get what they have.
Personally I feel it's legalised theft by the powers that be, so it certainly isn't worth it, get rid of it before they can get their hands on it.
