Halogen Versus CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) - Which Is More Energy Efficient & By How Much?
I cannot find ANY CFL's (at any big-box or other hardware store) that does not give off a harsh light. Halogen lights seem MUCH more natural in the light they give off than CFL's - but what is the energy use of a Halogen light versus a Compact Fluorescent? It sounds like a ban on incandscent lighting is forthcoming where I live but the CFL's I've been trying are almost intolerable! Candlelight is far more appealing.
One last thing - if Halogens are not a great alternative - then what's the alternative to all the Halogen tracklights in my kitchen - since when I tried the full-spectrum 'natural light' fluorescent tube type lights in my kitchen two years ago - I got headaches if I spent more than 15 minutes under them (so much for preparing meals!)

For those of you who have found CFL's that are not harsh in the color-tone they give off - WHAT BRAND are they please? At least that might help me ask a hardward store if they can order them.

Halogens are incandescent and less efficient than CFL. They use a tungsten filament bulb filled with halogen gas that fatigues more slowly than regular bulbs so last longer and can be run hotter so can be brighter.
Fluorescent aren't my favorite either because of the 60 Hz flicker (caused by the frequency of AC power) gives me eye strain.
A third option is coming. LED bulbs. I haven't tried one yet but they are even more efficient than CFL. Haven't read yet that they suffer from flicker either.
