I have a multimeter with an attached clampmeter from Radioshack. I made a splitwire attach - no reading??

Nobody at Radioshack seems to be able to help me. I got a replacement meter had same results.

It sound like your trying to read amperage in parallel. Amperage must be measured in series. Your draw on some electronics may be very small and a radio shack meter will not do.

Instead of all the trouble of measuring yourself, I have found that the power companies have teams of engineers that already have done the leg work for you. Try calling customer service and ask if they offer any assistance with this. If they have the service they will ask a few questions and be able to make a recommendation. You will then be able to inquire about qualified approved contractors to do the switch interface you will need. Most of this needs to be done by a qualified licensed electrician/engineer you will not be able to do it yourself. I have even heard of Electric companies working to help neighborhoods to get a shared larger generator and even help facilitate contractual maintenance of these big boy generators.

You also may be able to get a accurate daily consumption amount from them as well, to get a more accurate picture of what all you want to operate in an outage.

As for compressor start up you don't have the equipment to do accurate testing. Contact the manufactures of you furnace, refrigerator and any other high current appliances you have.
