Electrical wall socket question?
I bought a pack of duplex receptacles (wall outlets). I went to change the old one and all 3 white neutral wires were not hooked up and were taped together with electrical tape. It had 1 black wire (hot) on the silver screws and 1 black wire (hot) on the gold screws. I then put the white wires (neutral) on the silver screws which i was told it was supposed to be, and then the black (hot) wires on the gold screws. Did not work. I then put it back the way they had it (which does NOT look right) and it works. I thought that the white wires (neutral) were to go on the silver screws and black (hot) was supposed to go on the gold screws. I am confused. please help, I don't want a fire.
Someone just used a black wire and were not supposed to. I would just hook it back up the way it was. It is fine and no harm will come from it. Just confusion the next time the plug is changed.
The wires that are all capped together are just competing a different circuit. Leave those alone.
