Need help to install a dimmer switch. Wires don't seem to match up.?
I bought a dimmer switch to install in my apartment. However, when I removed my old light switch, the wires did not match up to the new dimmer switch. The old switch had two screws on the side. One had a single blue wire attached which was connected to two white wires from the wall (I assumed these white wires were the ground wires and should connect to the green wire on my new dimmer switch). But what confuses me is that instead of two black wires from the wall (which I was expecting from all the online demos I found), there was only one thicker from the wall wire connected to the second screw on my old switch. So I don't understand how to connect this thick wire to the two black wires on my new dimmer switch.
Can someone tell me how to install this dimmer properly? Do I need a different type of switch to accommodate this wiring setup? Thanks a ton in advance
Going by the colors of wires when you don't know what the other end is attached to is risky business. If your circuit breakers are OK, mis-wiring may only cause the breaker to trip (and possibly a need for a small load of laundry).
If you have a tester, you can separate the white wires, turn on the power and see what's hot and what's not. There should be a black "hot" wire and a white "cold" wire coming in. One of the white wires probably comes from the light, and there should be another black wire going to the light also. The blue wire was probably used to avoid connecting too many solid copper wires at 1 point. AFTER TURNING THE POWER BACK OFF, the switch should be installed between the black wires and the white wires should be connected together.
