can a handicaped become a commercial pilot?

i m an 18 year old it is my dream to be a commercial pilot. but cause of an accident i had to get my right leg amputated above the knee. but to make up for it ive a prosthetic. i believe i m equally good as others.i would like to no whetther this incapability is a wall to my dream of bein a commercial pilot forever. please give me all ya advise.....thank you...

I met a man, I forgot his name, but he was part of the U.S. Army Golden Knights precision parachute team. During a jump, he collided with another jumper and lost both of his legs from the knee down. He said, as far as he knew, he was the only U.S. citizen to hold an FAA medical (not sure which class) and be a licensed pilot with two prosthetic legs. He was able to fly a Cessna 172 to the speech I attended. As for being a commercial pilot, according to United Airlines website, you need to have a first class medical certificate and be able to manipulate all the controls on all of their aircraft. If you are able to effectively manipulate the rudder and brake controls on the pedals, It would be possible for you to be a commercial pilot. My advice to you, is to talk to an FAA designated Aviation Medical Examiner. Before you pay for the exam, describe your condition and ask if you could be disqualified because of the prosthetic. There is a directory of doctors, in your area, on the FAA website. You cannot start flight training, until you get the medical certificate anyway. After all that, and if everything went well, contact an airline or airline pilot and see what they think. Good luck to you.
