Does anyone know if I can break my lease for unsafe living conditions?
My boyfriend and I would like to break our lease, someone tried breaking in TWICE in the same night, last wednesday and a few weeks prior to that there was a shooting in the town-home complex where we live. Now we don't live in a complete ghetto I mean it's a fairly decent area, and what we could afford at the time of our moving in. They want us to pay $1420 and then $111 for each month that we've been there thus far. What i want to know is if there could be any loophole to get out of paying this. We're not cheapskates but we just don't feel we should have to pay. Please serious answers only. BTW we live in Michigan in case the laws vary from state to state.
I think that you are technically obligated to stay there because landlords can't be responsible for violence. If there are things structurally unsafe about the place that is different, if the landlord doesn't fix it. You can't use the actions of other people as leverage to get out of your lease if it doesn't specifically relate to your apartment (ex. unreasonable neighbor).
