Why did Tony Soprano dream he was a sales man?
Spoiler alert- If you haven't watched season 6, stop reading now. At the beginning of season six, Junior shoots Tony in the gut. Why Tony is in the hospital, he is dreaming that he's in LA and his briefcase/wallet got switched with a solar panel sales guy. Tony even talks to this guy's wife as if she was his wife.
What is the significance of this dream? Why did the writers include it? Why did they choose solar panels? The whole thing just seemed so random and out of place, I'm not sure what to make of it.
It all kind of represents everything that Tony is not. A simple life as a salesman with the loving wife and cute kids, trying to iron out problems that aren't even his (with the Monks) all the while being alone and vulnerable, having lost his wallet. And out the window "the beacon' (death) is beckoning him. At the reunion he sees his Mother in the doorway which gives him a headsup that something isn't quite right, as if seeing his cousin Tony B wasn't suspect enough. And he has no choice but to return to the only life he knows. I found it very thought provoking, much like dreams we have, which seem so fantastically real at times. Enjoy!
